Marc Maron & Mel Brooks – Oh HELLZ to the YEAH.

You’re all aware of my love for Marc Maron, his comedy, and especially his WTF podcast. If not, just take a gander at this pic —
Yup. That’s me and the man when he played Helium Comedy Club here in Portland last year.
In any case, on the podcast today? Totally out did himself. Full on interview with the classic, Mel Brooks. No lie. Mel Freakin’ Brooks. Mel Hisself.
Yes, I know, Chris Hardwick had already done this on The Nerdist Network. So what? That was nice. This? Is Godhead. Deep Mel information. Birth onward. John Wayne was asked to play Waco Kid in “Blazing Saddles” before Gene Wilder. I KNOW! Mind-roasting info on a King of Comedy History. Be amazed. Check it here.

Backfence, #nerd & a Very Loud Macaw Parrot.
So last Saturday night I attended another quarterly event of the Backfence PDX Storytelling series, at McMennamin’s Mission Theatre. The show was it’s usual delightful mix and a whole lot of fun — if you’ve never been to a Backfence show before, I highly recommend you try and get to one of their next shows or try their Backfence podcast.
Each Backfence show has a theme, and this one was for the geek in all of us, HASHTAG NERD (or as I prefer it — “#nerd”). And this show had one unexpected addition to it — me!
Before the end of intermission, you can sign up and offer to tell a ONE-MINTUE ONLY story on the subject of the evening, drop it into a pitcher and they choose five storytellers, with one minute each, on stage. Being I have a big background being a geek-nerd, and had some hilarious experiences in that field, I threw my name in.
And… I got chosen, which was very exciting!
And… I choked.
Well, not so much “choked,” but I got cut off. Though I thought it a short, simple, funny story, I had the time keeper call a very loud, “TIME!” on me. In my defenese, she did not call the 15-seconds warning to me, as she did with others, in which case I would have gracefully wrapped up. But who ever said life, or story telling, was fair?
However, it appears that a number of people wanted to hear the end of my story. Well, o.k. — one guy on Google+. But in the interest of not leaving anyone hanging, ever, herein lies my story and its completion. The parts I told at Backfence are in regular type, parts that i’ve added, including embellishments and that fateful ending that never got heard, are in italics.

My Friend Tanner’s Film, “Way To Heaven,” at CGIFF (special cameo appearance by: me)
My friend, the self-made author and auteur, Tanner Parsons, will be having his short comedy film, Way To Heaven, shown at the Columbia Gorge International Film Festival (CGIFF).
Oh, and i have a small part and do voice-overs as a psychopomp (yes, that’s a real word — Wikipedia it).

The film plays this Thursday, 8/16, 11:30 am at the newly renovated Kiggins Theatre on 1011 Main Street in Vancouver, Washington. Yeah, I know — damn early, and in Vancouver. But I hope you can deal and come on out for a fun piece.

Mike Birbiglia & Terry Gross: Action Stars!
So from a earlier post on here (even though the radio episode referred to has now been largely discredited), you have probably guessed what a big ol’ NPR/PRIlistening, This American Life and Ira Glass fanboi I am.
Well, last Thursday, May 10th, I had the pleasure of wandering over to our own Portland Regal Lloyd Center 10 Cinemas in the evening, and watched, through Fathom Events, broadcast live from New York via satellite, a two-hour extravaganza of This American Life Live.
I was in Public Radio visual heaven, on the theme of “making the invisible visible.”
Ira Glass and Ryan Knighton and the Monica Bill Barnes Dance Company and OK Go (who coded a special mobile app that the audience could use to play along just for their performance in the show) and David Rakoff dancing and Glynn Washington and David Sedaris inexplicably in clown make-up and fun animations and films and dance and stylized photos by an amazing unknown photographer from the 1960s and Tig Nataro and Taylor Dayne. That’s right, you heard me: 90s dance club legend Taylor Dayne. We really love her voice. I have two new reviews up at Portland Stage Reviews — Check it.

I convinced Sabrina of Portland Stage Reviews to let me do a review on Ignite Portland 10 — hey, it’s on a stage (the Bagdad), it’s presentational, it has a lot of entertainment and humor, and it’s about getting people excited about what excites you, or what you geek-out on. If that’s not theater, i don’t know what is. So here it is, I called it: Willfully Inciting Fire in a Theater (and Your Mind).
I covered The Julians performing at First Presbyterian Church in downtown PDX. What I didn’t mention was the church-lady-perfume-and-old-person-hospital-farty smell purveying everywhere during the event. Ugh.
